I was listening to a podcast of some women I thought were doing well as entrepreneurs. What stood out for me was when they both agreed that entrepreneurship can take you to therapy. It will make you ask questions about your identity you never thought you would. It will make you ask questions about your ability you never thought you would. Sometimes you must ask yourself tough questions about your childhood in search of answers to the challenges faced on the journey.
I saw a post that made me giggle, and the author had written that, “Today we are not motivating anyone if you want to quit, quit.” After giggling I thought about the statement and reflected on my journey as an entrepreneur how many times I have felt lonely on the journey. Sometimes I wish someone could cheer me up and remind me to show up anyway. It made me realize that the people who succeeded as entrepreneurs did not have people clapping for them and reminding them of their capabilities but sometimes, they had to stand before the mirror and see the desired entrepreneur they wish for themselves in the mirror. Some have had to stand in front of the mirror dressed in that expensive suit and walking like someone entering a board meeting but a board meeting in the future.
If you are going to wait for your team’s applause sometimes, they will be waiting for you to cheer them. I was listening to Indra Nooyi former PepsiCo CEO, and she said if you are going to succeed as a leader you take the blame when things go wrong and credit it to the team if things go well. It challenged me to think that it takes a woman who is secure in their identity, who knows how to encourage themselves to take accountability when things go wrong in an organization at that level.
Sometimes we sit and wish someone could come and encourage us, but we realize that we are all in a race which we need to win at the end. We show up even when it makes sense to quit. David in the bible encouraged himself when it made sense to quit. (1 Samuel 30:1-6)
“The Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev and on Ziklag and had overthrown Ziklag and burned it with fire; and they took captive the women and all who were in it without killing anyone and carried them off and went their way. When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept. Now David’s two wives had been taken captive, David was distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
